Joomla – Some questions answered

from:

What is Joomla?

Joomla is a very effective, fully functional content management system for the building of personal, business or corporate websites. It is used all over the world for a variety of websites from the simplest to the most complex of websites for all manner of purposes, including the secure payments necessary for ecommerce.

Can I install Joomla myself?

Yes. Anyone can, really. Joomla is pretty easy to install. It is also easily managed and a very reliable content management system. This open source content management system is meant for the beginner to be able to install and the wealth of online Joomla tutorials are very easy to find and to walk through.

How will a content management system help me?

A content management system takes care of al the design, management and navigation of your website at the building stage. It does all that for you, so all you need to concentrate on is the writing of your Joomla website’s content. It make sit easier than many other content management systems to add as many pages as you want.

Joomla is easy to extend and to add new functionalities to, so article directories, RSS feeds, blogs etc are no problems for Joomla and n problems for you to install, either.

The look of your Joomla website can easily be changed any time you want and many free templates are available to make that easy too.

Content managements systems, if they are to be effective, need to be dynamic. You have that with Joomla. This content managements system can also easily categorize your content into ‘most recent’, ‘most popular’ etc too.

The interactive nature of Web 2.0 websites is easy to achieve with Joomla as polls and comments are easily allowed and set up.

What does Joomla cost?

Potentially, nothing. Zero. Zip. All the functionalities you could ever want in a content management system are free with Joomla. There are some provisions to pay for certain templates from some providers but strictly speaking that is not necessary. The same sort of content management system, even if you could find one with Joomla’s amazingky extendable functionality another way, which is doubtful, would cost you thousands, making Joomla a true bargain – and free!

It’s free, you say? That sounds dodgy!

Many organizations get a little antsy when they see a free system. They think they will be left high and dry to deal with a ton of problems. That is understandable, especially in business. However, Joomla offers very good support services for any of their solutions. Joomla is highky extendable, so it can be a little tough to learn how to use it, but there is plenty of online help available. You can also try a demonstration model of Joomla prior to getting the full package for yourself.

So, there really is no catch. Joomla is free, secure and reliable and the support is good. Sure the learning curve may be steep when you first get Joomla, but you will be glad you got used to using it when you see all the things it can do for you.
