16. Tips On How To Choose A Good Domain Name

from:

In today’s technology driven world, it is difficult to survive competition. With the effects of global recession finally showing in almost every sphere of the economy, each individual is doing his utmost to attract more clients to his business. But since most of the major business processes operate online, it has become inevitable that they reach for a good professional website to help reach their goals. The catch is that every single competitor out there has a website too. And maybe their website is far more successful in attracting clients than yours is? One of the reasons behind this could be the selection of your domain name.

Write this down in bold letters where you can see it everyday - a good domain name for your website is one of the most important things for your business.

Some of the factors which must be kept in mind for choosing a domain name are:

What’s in a name?

The domain name will be to your website what your name is to you. Hence, the more unique and interesting it is, the better. Also, the domain name should be indicative of what your site deals in.

It is also important to keep your domain name as short and interesting as possible. Shorter domain names are easier to remember and will more likely stay on in the client’s memory.

Hyphen it or not?

Most of the people are often flummoxed when it comes to choosing a hyphenated domain name. Well, this is one tricky part which has its own advantages and disadvantages. The flipside of choosing a hyphenated domain name is that more likely than not, your clients may forget the hyphen. In case, people tend to circulate or publicize the name of your domain via word of mouth publicity, they are even more likely to omit the hyphen while mentioning the name. Moreover it is a pain to type hyphen again and again.

On the brighter side, if the non hyphenated form of the name is already taken, you can still have the same name, though with a slight twist. Search engines are more prone to deliver better results for a website with hyphenated domain name.

Choose the right extension

Another hassle that people face while choosing a good domain name, is choosing a proper extension for the domain name. Most of the times, if the standard “.com” domain name is already taken, people settle for other domain names, such as “.net” or “.org”. In such a situation, it is important to choose the domain name keeping in mind, whether the site is region or country specific, or does it cater to customers all over the world.

All said and done, it is important to choose the right domain name once and for all. You would not like to change the domain name of your website time and again. Especially, since that would make you lose so many visitors. So, name it right the first time round and you can be sure that you have given the right online start to your business.
